3 women who left their mark thanks to their art and personality

Currently, the female gender is in a constant struggle for its identity  and  to reconcile the different roles it has in its life.

This struggle would be somewhat more inspiring if in today’s society female icons, women who hold high positions in all spheres of society, were endowed with talent, authenticity and simplicity.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case and the models that we find most accessible are not exactly the most suitable.

It is good then to look back and look for some inspiration in some women who knew how to leave their mark on the collective imagination due to their talent, character and determination.

Clear examples that people who dedicate their existence to being true to themselves and not trying to impress others, leave a much deeper mark than they ever intended.

In this article we refer to three of them:

Greta garbo

It is the absolute myth of the seventh art and a style icon that crosses generations, but the principles of this actress were anything but easy.

She was born into an extremely poor family in Sweden, which caused the actress to find herself in need from a very young age to work on whatever she could.

At the age of 14 he was the image of a department store. And soon she received offers from Hollywood that she knew how to take advantage of, but always rejecting that her private life was commercialized.

An example of discretion and professionalism, she always strived to be a good actress (she started out in silent movies); and he did not succumb to millionaire offers of interviews about his private life in print and audiovisual media.

She retired at the age of 36 and lived alone for the rest of her life because she wanted to, investing her fortune in thriving businesses.

A great lover of nature, tranquility and his family, he died in New York at 84 years of age, leaving a legacy of unequaled know-how and mystery.

An example of how good manners and fidelity to principles also have a place in show business.

Frida Kahlo

The most famous Mexican in history is a true legend for her paintings and for her passionate personality and inner world, which she always expressed in an artistic way.

His existence was marked by the endless suffering of physical pain throughout his life. As a child, she was the victim of pennyroyal, which left her with one leg thinner than the other and severe pain. But fate struck her again with an accident at the age of 18 that would mark her forever.

The bus in which she was traveling suffered a collision and an iron bar displaced from the structure, reaching her and going through her entire pelvis.

The result was devastating: his spine was fractured in three parts. Her right leg was fractured in eleven parts, her right foot was dislocated, her left shoulder was dislocated, and a handrail passed through her from her left hip and out through her vagina.

That damage put her on the bed for a long time in extreme pain. He underwent more than 30 surgeries and lived in a plaster corset.

Bedridden, she chose painting and writing to express her pain, she managed to recover during some periods and lived passionate romances; the most famous with Diego Rivera with whom she suffered several miscarriages that plunged her into deep sadness.

All his love and frustration were expressed with such sensitivity in his work that it was elevated as a worldwide symbol of the wonderful artistic expression of pain in art.

He died at 47 years of age and with each passing year his human and artistic legacy seems to be more relevant to the world. Undoubtedly, art is a way of being immortal.

Maria Callas

María Callas was a Greek-born soprano who became the most influential opera singer of the 20th century.

His parents were Greek immigrants in New York, where they settled and managed to have a comfortable standard of living, thanks to the fact that his father was a pharmacist and soon created a prosperous business.

Her parents divorced and she returned to Greece with her mother, with whom she did not have a very good relationship. Later, Callas declared that her mother had been instrumental in weakening some aspects of her self-esteem, calling her fat, ugly and continually comparing her with her other sister.

Even so, her career was rising like foam, but in a staggered way, since María did not want to simply sing in works that already had guaranteed success, she wanted to sing in works that transmitted something more to her.

Maria Callas face

There was a lot of commentary at the time how she rejected roles that supposed instant fame for the women who played her, but she trusted her instincts, continued to train and had an enviable career thanks to always being guided by her criteria. They came to nickname her “The divine.”

The musicologist Kurt Pahlen, defined his art as “… her song resembles an open wound, which bleeds giving up its vital forces … as if she were the memory of the world’s pain …”.

After meeting Onassis, she left her husband, and with the Greek tycoon she starred in a great media stir. Before meeting Onassis his voice had already dropped in quality, he had lost a lot and after the break with Onassis the problems with his vocal cords worsened.

Onassis tried to get her back on numerous occasions, but Maria had a very strong character and she never forgave him for abandoning her in this way for Jacqueline Kennedy, although she always remained in love with him.

In the last days of his life Onassis asked Maria to be with him and she finally accompanied him to the end.

Maria was always a very sensitive and insecure woman, but of surprising determination and character at the same time.

He died at the age of 53 of a heart attack, although the theory of suicide with tranquilizers is not ruled out. It may be that the sensitive and insecure Maria and the legendary “La divina” chose to rest forever in their city, Paris; after a life of lights and shadows but above all of pure feeling.

She lived alone in her last stage and died alone… and it is that: “The worst sadness is the one that has no witnesses.”
